Aston Villa appears to be rekindling interest in Marco Asensio, with discussions already underway with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), according to former Villa senior scout Mick Brown. Manager Unai Emery seems eager to bring the 29-year-old Spaniard back to Villa Park—and it’s easy to see why.
A Shift in Strategy
Earlier this summer, Villa opted not to activate the option to make Asensio’s loan move permanent, choosing instead to pursue other attacking targets. However, Emery is keen to strengthen his squad, and with PSG reportedly open to a cut-price deal due to Asensio having just one year left on his contract, the situation has changed.
By mid-August, Brown noted that talks were progressing, with Villa pushing hard to finalize the deal before the transfer window closes.
A Familiar Face
Brown first mentioned Villa’s interest in Asensio back in March, following the Spaniard’s successful early loan spell. He highlighted that Asensio is enthusiastic about rejoining the team, and personal terms should not pose a problem. “I expect Asensio will return to Aston Villa,” Brown stated, suggesting that this move could be a savvy piece of business if Villa adheres to their budget.
While there were initial concerns regarding Asensio’s fitness to perform consistently—especially after his impactful stint alongside Marcus Rashford at PSG—his quality has never been in question. Brown emphasizes that Villa knows the player well; he has remained on their radar, and with PSG indicating that he’s not central to their plans, a reunion seems logical.
Exploring Additional Options
Villa isn’t stopping at Asensio. They are also pursuing Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson. The Senegal striker has reportedly expressed to friends that he would prefer to wear claret and blue rather than sitting on the bench for the Blues. Emery, who previously worked with Jackson at Villarreal, is keen to reunite with him. If Jackson finds himself lower in the pecking order under new manager Enzo Maresca, a transfer could be on the horizon.
Smart Business Moves
With Emery committed to enhancing his squad without overspending, these late-window maneuvers could prove to be shrewd. Who wouldn’t want to snag a bargain like this?
